June 27, 2016 - Dunrobin Castle, The Emigrants, John O'Groats, Italian Chapel, Kirkwall

Dunrobin Castle:  Could only look from a distance because it is an occupied home. Beautifully kept without being ostentatious. My camera battery decided to die but fortunately as we were leaving.

The Emigrants statue - very moving for me. This represented people who were removed during the clearings when the Lairds removed people from their homes as well as those who chose to go to new homes.

Dunbeath:  Enjoyed watching the activity on the harbour - didn't bother doing to the tourist shop.

John O'Groats:  Most northern Spot in Scotland - even has a Starbucks. Got my photo in front of the mileage sign for points around the world.

We took the ferry to the Orkney Islands but it was cold and dreary so I decided to stay inside.

South Ronaldsey Beach: Lots and lots of cairns, or Inuksuk to me! The group decided to add a few rocks to a few more. I decided to look for shells and found a few to bring home.

Italian Chapel:  Build by WW2 Prisoners of War - I didn’t go in but heard it was quite lovely. Got photos of their statue of St. George.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_Chapel

We then stopped at Mull Head to stretch our legs and I managed to get quite a few more fantastic sea and cliff photos.

Kirkwall:  Really charming town. Gets lots of cruise ships so lots of tourists. Absolutely fantastic cathedral - St. Magnus - huge and very impressive. I managed to break my phone/iPad charger so had to buy a new one - I was pretty upset about it but managed to find one for a reasonable price so all was not lost. We had dinner at Judith Glue's - nice meal and M was delighted to get some Orkney Ale and a good vegetarian meal. There were a whole bunch of tourist things I would have quite happily boughtbut didn't. Had some rhubarb ice-cream which was really nice - might try to make my own.
